An inter-related family – the Scoulars

John and Janet Scoular were my 3 x great grandparents who arrived in Australia in November 1853.  They were   also my first cousins five times removed as their fathers, James and Gavin were brothers.

John and Janet’s daughter Mary married Alexander Ralston in Bairnsdale in February 1868.  Alexander was the son of Alexander Ralston and Marion Scoular.  Marion was a younger sister of Janet.  Therefore Mary married her first cousin and second cousin.

Then James Gavin Scouller, son of John and Janet Scouller married Janet Scouller Ralston, daughter of his sister Mary and Alexander Ralston.  He was her uncle and first cousin once removed.

Another sister Marion married William Beveridge in Fitzroy in 1868.  Their daughter Marion Ellen Beveridge married Ernest Hermann Baade.  His sister Frances Victoria Baade married Marion’s brother John Mitchell Beveridge.  Another sister Eliza Baade married Alexander John Ralston, son of Mary Scouller and Alexander Ralston.  The youngest daughter of Alexander John Ralston and Eliza Baade, Mary Evelyn Ralston married Eric Leonard Wehner.  He was the son of Carl Herman Julius Wehner and Agnes Scouller.  She was the daughter of Robert Scouller and Mary Anson.  This was the ‘other’ Scouller brothers, Robert and John who also arrived in Victoria in the 1850s.  They were from the same area in Scotland as ‘our’ Scoullers (various pronunciations).

Mary Jane Ralston, another daughter of Mary Scouller and Alexander Ralston married Harold Coverdale in Bairnsdale in 1909.  Harold’s three sisters married the sons of Mary’s sister Janet and Adam Johnstone.  Janet and Adam’s eldest, Elizabeth Renwick Johnstone married Westrop Carlos Waller who was the son of Ringrose Cadburn Waller and Angelina Carlos.  His sister Alice Catherine married Philip Charles Plaisted.  Their son Phillip Waller Plaisted married Minnie Theresa Britnell neice of my two x great grandmother Emma Britnell who married Samuel Collier.

There are many more connections but this is probably enough for one story.

As always I’d love to hear from anyone who has any connections or knowledge of anyone mentioned here or associated families, particularly if you have any photos or family documents.

  1. Hi Lynda, My husband is a descendant of Ernest Hermann Baade. I’m trying to find when Ernest Hermann’s father Bernard Baade came to Australia from the area north of Kiel in present day Germany. I found obituaries for Ernest and Marion via Trove; they were Seventh Day Adventists. Is this related to the Scoular’s faith? Thank you so much for disentangling some of these relationships! Ingrid
