Today I visited Oakleigh Pioneer Cemetery in Oakleigh, Victoria. My four times great grandparents (on my father’s mother’s side) Johann Christoph Erhardt and Margaretha Barbara Frohlich are buried there along with four of their grandchildren. These were the children of their daughter Rosina Barbara and her husband Henry Richardson. Does anyone have photos of any of this family or their descendants? I would love to have copies. Does anyone have stories about these families? Please get in touch.
Johann known in Australia as John was born in Hegnach, Germany on May 19, 1815. He married Margaretha on October 13, 1840. They and their six children left Hamburg, Germany on July 4, 1856 on board the Electric arriving in Hobson’s Bay, Victoria on December 26, 1856. Their eldest child was eighteen and their youngest only three.
Tragedy struck in 1859 when their youngest daughter, Johanna Margaretha died on July 15 aged five. She was buried in Brighton Cemetery. Two years later John lost his wife Barbara when she died on June 21, 1861. She died of phthisis (TB) that she’d had for two years. Barbara was 47 years old. She was buried in Oakleigh Pioneer Cemetery. Although I couldn’t find any tombstones for the families they are commemorated on bricks in the centre of the cemetery.
My three times great grandmother was their eldest child, Katharina Magdalena who married Leberecht Fiedler, a widower from Silesia in Prussia. This is suppose to be a photo of here.
John and Barbara Erhardt’s daughter Rosina Barbara married Henry Richardson in 1871. They had nine children but four died tragically young. They are all buried in the Oakleigh Pioneer Cemetery. Annie Barbara was eight months old when she died in July 1875, Ernest was eight when he died in March 1879, Henry Ernest was only two months old when he died in May 1882 and May Annie was a year old in January 1891.
May Annie had died two weeks after her grandfather John. Johann Christoph Erhardt died on January 4, 1891 aged 75 years from brights disease. He was buried with his wife and grandchildren in the Oakleigh Pioneer Cemetery. He had farmed at Black Flat.
John and Barbara’s daughter Maria Magdalena married John Stothers on September 16, 1867. They lived at Stratford near Sale.
I am still searching for information on their son Johann Michael Erhard(t) who seems to have disappeared. I know many of the German families changed their names. Perhaps someone knows what happened to him.
